Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss announced that October is Feral Cat Month in Irvington. During this month there will be a focus on educating the public about the cats and continuing projects to help limit the population of the wild cats in a humane and legal way.
“There are hundreds of wild cats living in the township of Irvington, “said Mayor Vauss. “They are protected by law and it is our responsibility to make sure that the people and the cats coexist in a healthy way. We are moving forward to humanely lower the number of feral cats in our community.”
“The Health Department is sponsoring a number of events during Feral Cat Month and beyond,”
said Health Director Stephanie Bush-Baskette. “During the month we are conducting a pilot trap-neuter-release (TNR) program. It is our first and will enable us to work on a humane way to reduce the feral cat population in Irvington. Afterwards, we plan to apply for additional funds to expand the program. We are also sponsoring a pet drive. Bins are located at the Town Hall and the main Fire House. People can drop off cat and dog food, toys, small bottle feeding kits, and treats. Each Saturday in October, from 11am-noon, what was collected that week will be distributed at the Irvington Fire Station at Civic Square, to Irvington residents.”
